Eye Cornea Conditions > Astigmatism

Astigmatism is a condition in which both near and distant objects appear blurred. The lens or the cornea of the eye (or even both) is curved more steeply in one meridian than another like a football (instead of a basketball). This uneven curvature allows light rays to focus on more than one point in the eye thus blurring the visual image on the retina. Astigmatism may occur in combination with myopia and hyperopia.

In the football-shaped astigmatic eye, the lightstream focuses in 2 different locations.

Due to uneven corneal curvature focus is scattered on more than 1 point in the eye thus blurring the visual image on the retina.
