Procedures > Phakic Intraocular Lens Implantation (Phakic IOLs)

Phakic Intraocular Lens (IOL) Implantation is a surgical option when an eye is too myopic for excimer laser corneal surgery. It differs from laser refractive procedures because it does not reshape the cornea. Instead, it involves the surgical insertion of a lens inside the front part of the eye through a small incision in the peripheral cornea—just like IOL insertion during standard cataract surgery. The proper lens is selected to correct nearsightedness. This procedure is best suited for patients who are not presbyopic, as the patient's natural lens is left in place behind the iris to provide accommodation.

Instead of removing the eye's
natural lens, the intraocular lens is surgically inserted in front of the iris.
