Unlike other refractive surgical procedures which involve reshaping the cornea, refractive lensectomy replaces the natural lens of the eye. It is quite similar to cataract surgery.

After numbing the eye, the surgeon removes the natural lens using

ultrasound and replaces it with an intraocular lens (IOL). The corrective power of the IOL can be selected for near or distance vision depending on the
patient’s needs. For patients who want a certain degree of simultaneous near and distance vision, the ReSTOR Multifocal lens can be implanted. The ReSTOR lens implant can be likened to putting a bifocal lens inside your eye.

Refractive lensectomy is ideal for those who are already presbyopic and not good candidates for other refractive surgical procedures that involve modifying the shape of the cornea.
