The Oculus Pentacam HR is a state-of-the-art anterior segment tomography system. It is considered by many as the Gold Standard in the field of anterior segment imaging. It is equipped with an automatically rotating Scheimpflug camera which captures images from the entire circumference of the eye. This is a major advancement in the area of anterior segment analysis as this provides the specialist a detailed and accurate three-dimensional picture of the front and back sides of the cornea, anterior chamber and crystalline lens. Furthermore a typical examination last only a few seconds thus is more comfortable for the patient.

The Pentacam is used in the preoperative screening for refractive surgery. This system effectively weeds out eyes that may not be suitable for refractive surgery such as those patients with subtle abnormalities in the back surface of the cornea. The data generated is also used in planning for the treatment. It is also employed as an aid in evaluating the corneoscleral angle in glaucoma and lens opacification in cataract patients.

This invaluable tool greatly enhances safety in refractive surgery.
